FEBRUARY EVENTS Your Spiritual Garden-Tending to the Presence of God February 18, 25, March 4, 11, 18, 25 Time: 7:00 - 8:30 pm Presented by: Charlene Huff Donation: $30 all 6 weeks or $5 per session RSVP: February 12 Spend an hour and a half each Thursday Evening during Lent and become a spiritual gardener of your own "life garden" (your soul) as we begin to plant seeds, tend to daily details, appreciate growth, prune what is unnecessary, and gather and share the rich fruits of our labor as we encounter God in all the moments of our day. Recovering Grace Through Reconciliation February 25, Thursday Time: 10:00 am to 3:00 pm Presented by: Fr. Barry Stechschulte Donation: $15 includes lunch RSVP: February 19 Father Barry Stechschulte, Parochial Vicar at Holy Trinity Church, Coldwater leads this one day seminar as we look at how the grace of the Sacrament of Reconciliation helps us to honestly face our failings and thus learn to be forgivers, ourselves. Father Stechschulte, originally from Minster, entered the religious congregation of the Legionaries of Christ studying and working in the U.S., Spain and Italy. After suffering a brain aneurism he left the congregation in March of 2000, and began working at Royalmont Academy, a small, private Catholic school in Mason, Ohio. He entered the Archdiocesan seminary in September of 2004 and was ordained in May of 2009. (Mass will be included during the day.) This weekend of prayer, relaxation, sharing, and fun will give guidelines to discerning God's real voice. Larry Reichley returns this year as the presenter for this annual retreat. Larry has given many retreats over the past years at the Spiritual Center and we are always pleased when he can return. Prayer and Benediction April 4, Sunday Time: 6:00 pm Held in the Chapel of the Spiritual Center. Retreat in the Real World April 6, Tuesday Time: 7:00 pm Presented by: Suzanne Lammi Donation: $5/session RSVP: April 12 Here is a retreat opportunity for those who cannot get away from daily responsibilities to take a residential retreat. Beginning in April, the Spiritual Center is offering a retreat with several attractive options. First, is the online format through Creighton University. This can be done in your own home at your convenience. All you need is internet access. This option includes daily readings and reflection. You can also download an audio version of this retreat in which you listen as you commute to work. The third option is to use the book entitled Retreat in the Real World. To view this retreat, go to www.creighton.edu and click on Ministry, then follow the link to Online Retreat. The Spiritual Center will host a small group meeting every two weeks to help guide you during this retreat. It will last from April to December and offers and exciting opportunity to do an Ignatian Retreat without leaving your other responsibilities. The women we will encounter are Eve, Mary of Nazareth, Miriam of Exodus, the woman caught in adultery and Mary of Magdala. Sr. Carol Gaeke, OP will be the presenter for this weekend retreat. She is the Parish Life Director at Ascension Parish in Kettering, Ohio. She was the Director of Personnel and Ministry for the Dominican Sisters in Elkins Park, PA. She has worked in religious education at the parish, diocesan and college level for over 30 years. Sister Gaeke has her BA in History from Immaculate College, her MA in Religious Studies form the University of Dayton, (Ohio) and an MA in Counseling from Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida. Sr. Carol has ministered in the Albany, New York; Orlando, Florida; Cincinnati, Ohio and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Dioceses. She was an adjunct theology faculty member for Loyola University, Barry University and Xavier University. In addition to her parish ministry she does retreats, days of recollection and theology presentations. She is also a columnist for The Catholic Telegraph. Getting In Touch With Nature, A Walk of Discovery April 24, Saturday Time: 10:00 am to 1:00 pm Presented by: Dr. Robert Hiskey Donation: $15.00 includes lunch RSVP: April 16 Bring your cameras and join us in observing spring wild flowers, trees and animals living among them, as Dr. Robert Hiskey, Associate Professor of Biology at Wright State University Lake Campus leads us on a nature walk through the primitive pathways of the Spiritual Center woods. When we experience the beauty of the natural world, and comprehend the interrelationship of man and the natural environment, we are more inclined to preserve these resources. As Dr. Hiskey states, "Nature walks like this are one way to introduce people to the joy of getting close to God's real world." Dr. Hiskey earned his BS in Biological Education with Minors in Zoology and Botany from the University of Nebraska, going on to complete his MS Degree from Florida State University in Biological Oceanography, and achieved his PH.D. from the University of Nebraska in Limnology (Aquatic Ecology). Unveiling the Mystery and Spiritual Richness of Holy Icons June 11 - 13, Friday through Sunday Time: Begins at 7 pm Friday through 1 pm Sunday Presented by: Sr. Marcia Klowan, OSF Donation: $160.00 per person RSVP: May 28th Although Eastern Church Icons do not appeal to the Western eye, they have a hidden and mysterious inner beauty. Through her presentations, Sister Marcia Klowan, OSF, a sister of St. Francis Newman Community, will bring participants to an understanding and appreciation of icons, a rich treasure of the Eastern Church. The presentation will include an historical overview comparison of East and West Church; religious art, worship, theology, symbolic language and characteristics of icons. Sr. Marcia will present barious Icons explaining their meaning. She will lead retreatants into the experience of Icon prayer through "The Prayer of the Loving Gaze." For more than a decade, Sr. Marcia has had extensive experiences which include: a sabbatical of personal study of Easter Church Spirituality, Worship and Icons, and has participated in several Icon painting programs under the guidance of Master Iconographers. She paints in her studio and teacher her art to others in the New York area. The Heart of Centering Prayer June 11 - 13, Friday through Sunday Time: Begins at 7 pm Friday through 1 pm Sunday Presented by: Sr. Dorothy Feltz Donation: $160.00 per person RSVP: May 28th This weekend retreat will focus on what "Centering Prayer" is and is not; how Centering Prayer leads into contemplative prayer; practicing the four r's of Lectio Divina, and extending the effects of Centering Prayer into daily life. Sr. Doroty Felts, S.S.J., studied Intensive; Post Intensive and Advanced Centering Prayer Retreats with Father Thomas Keating. She has a Masters Degree in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University in Chicago, is certified in Para-Professional Counseling from the University of Buffalo, and has been a practitioner and teacher of Centering Prayer since 1988. Sr. Doroty currently facilitates four Centering Prayer groups that meet weekly for one and one half hours in the Buffalo area. Raymond Roh, OSB Donation: $435.00 per person RSVP: July 2nd To be a disciple of Jesus is to strive to become whole in body, soul, mind and spirit. Fr. Ray will explore how scripture, especially the Sermon on the Mount and Beatitudes and the insights of psychology help us in our search for wholeness. Fr. Raymond Roh, O.S.B., has been a Benedictine Monk since 1980, and lived in the Pecos Benedictine Monastery in New Mexico from 1976 to 1987, He helped develope the Pecos School for Spiritual Directors, which began in 1978, and served as its Coordinator from 1984 - 1987. He holds Masters Degrees in Educational Administration from Catholic University of America, Washington D.C. and in Religious Education from Creighton University, with post-graduate study at the Collegio Sant'Anselmo in Rome. Father Ray is a member of Spiritual Directors International and the American Benedictine Academy. He has ministered in the areas of evangelization, personal renewal, and healing prayer throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and many other foreign countries. He has served as a Spiritual Director for Priests and Deacons inthe southern part of the Diocese of Fresno for ten years, and has ministered as a part-time prison chaplain for over eleven years. Mary, Our Model for Discipleship August 2 - 6, Monday through Friday Time: Begins at 7 pm Monday through 1 pm Friday Presented by: Fr. Bert Buby, SM Donation: $280.00 per person RSVP: July 23rd Father Bertrand Andrew Buby (beeUbee) is a Marianist priest who teaches at the University of Dayton, in Dayton, Ohio. Currently, he is a professor for the International Marian Research Institute. He completed a licentiate in Theology at the U. of Fribourg in Switzerland (1964), a licentiate in Sacred Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome (1966) and a doctorate in Theology from the Marianum-I.M.R.I. Pontivical Institute in Rome/Dayton (1980). He taught Scripture and Religion at the University of Dayton from 1968 - 2000. He frequently lectures on biblical topics and Marian themes. He is an active member of the Christian Jewish Dialogue since 1972. He is the author of eight books, the most recent is entitled "With a Listening Heart: Biblical Reflections on the Psalms." He has a trilogy on "Mary of Galilee" and a commentary on the Book of Revelation. He also has translated form the French "Mary in the Mystery of the Covenant" a work done by the renowned Belgian Jesuit, Ignace de la Potterie, Fr. Bert's former teacher. Fr. Bert loves to write meditations on the daily Scriptures which he considers part of his morning prayers. He held the office of President for the Mariological Society of America from 1999 - 2000, served as Provincial of the Marianists from 1981 - 1989, and was on the Board of Trustees at the University of Dayton in the same period. He also was named to the Pontifical International Marian Academy. He lives with the Marianists at 312 Stonemill Road, Dayton, Ohio.
